WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

Activist Ndaba MandelaActivist Ndaba Mandela Inspires Students to Take Action

The first time Ndaba Mandela met his grandfather, he was 7 years old and had just completed a 12-hour trip from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

The 21st  for the annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human & Civil Rights Symposium at Stockton was told by his parents that his grandfather — Nelson Mandela, an internationally recognized activist and opponent of South African apartheid — was under house arrest.

As a child, he didn’t understand the reason behind his grandfather’s captivity or that he was in trouble at all — just that the nice mansion that he was currently resting and being fed in after a long trip had a kind man who undoubtedly spoiled him.

Who could blame the child for turning to his parents and quipping, “When I grow up, I want to go to jail too.”

This story was just one of many that Ndaba Mandela shared about his grandfather during the Oct. 8 event. A couple of years after that fateful visit, Ndaba Mandela’s father started taking university classes and decided to leave the boy in Nelson's care. He proved to be an at-times strict but ultimately very caring parental figure for him.

New Two New Degree ProgramsSchool of Business Announces New Two New Degree Programs

Stockton continues to adapt to an ever-changing business world by  two new degree programs starting with the spring 2025 semester — a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship and a Master of Science in Accounting.

The new programs highlight how the University’s School of Business embraces emerging industries and prepares 91Ƶ for future career opportunities as they join two other recent undergraduate offerings in Bachelors of Science in Hemp and Cannabis Business Management and Esports Management. Entrepreneurship will also be available as a new minor to 91Ƶ.

The Entrepreneurship program’s comprehensive curriculum covers essential topics such as commercialization, business planning, marketing strategies, global entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership. Students will engage in real-world projects that allow them to apply classroom knowledge to practical situations.

Stockton’s new Accounting program is distinctive from other area institutions for many reasons, including a professional work experience and internship requirement, an alignment with the CPA licensure, two concentrations in forensic accounting and business analytics, and accreditation through the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, said Carla Cabarle, associate professor of Accounting and the chair of the program.

Fun Fact Friday: Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day, coinciding with October being LGBTQ+ History Month. The first observation was in 1988, and by 1990, it was being celebrated in all 50 states. The day was inspired when 500,000 people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on Oct. 11, 1987, generating momentum to last for four months after the march had ended. During this period, over a hundred LGBTQ+ identifying individuals gathered outside Washington, D.C., and decided to create a national day to celebrate coming out – this began on the first anniversary of the historic march.
